Porn: It's All in Your Brain!

Some porn addicts have described themselves as two persons. It’s as though someone else takes over you, like Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. You feel like you aren’t in control of your own actions.

To understand what is happening, consider the two parts of the brain, the limbic system and the prefrontal cortex. An article in Psychology Today by Leon F. Seltzer, PhD, a psychologist who specializes in compulsive/addictive behaviors, explained the functions of these two parts of the brain: The frontal lobe is “the part of the brain that controls reasoning, logic, values, goals, self-discipline, self-restraint and willpower.” The limbic system “has one narrow focus—the intense pursuit of instant pleasure and reward at the cost of everything else.” Seltzer elaborates:

“Porn viewing releases many of the same chemicals triggered by street drug use. Over time, these chemicals change the brain in significant ways. Basically, the frontal lobes shrink and become increasingly handicapped. … At the same time, the Limbic System of the brain is hyper-activated and becomes dominant. … Bent on getting the pleasure rush of porn … this is what the Limbic System says to the Frontal Lobes—’I don’t care if you lose your job, your marriage, your future or anything else! I want what I want and I want it NOW!’

“Under the influence of powerful neuro-chemicals, porn viewing plunges the individual into a very ‘narrow funnel’ where all logic, reason, consequences, etc. are blocked out.”[i]–Bold added.

Once your limbic system takes control of your brain, you will feel you have little option but to ride things through until the end. Compulsive gamblers have experienced it. Alcoholics have experienced it. Drug addicts have experienced it. Porn is no different.

If your limbic system is in control, you will feel paralyzed, unable to make any other choice than to indulge your addiction. You will literally feel as if someone else is controlling your mind and your body.
